In Those Days

The year subsides into clouds
more beautiful than any ever seen

Atieno can’t say goodbye yet

With hands not new to harshness and cracked feet that speak of turbulence
she grapples the roughness of prickly days and freezing nights under the starry skies
Her grumbling tummy remains her only companion

Still Atieno won’t bid goodbye

Maybe one day in one of the trifling rows with the madam
and she is bleeding black and blue
her breath barely a whisper
and her reality dimly progresses

Atieno will smile and say goodbye

PSA; This is an ode to Marjorie Macgoye’s Freedom Song
